Wales lockdown latest update

Wales Covid 19 lockdown is still in place from March 1st 2021.

We are pleased to confirm that we are continuing to be open for all types of repairs while the Wales lockdown is still in place.

This includes all emergency lock and door repairs and Garage door repairs.

Locksmiths are considered key workers due to the obvious security risks to properties.

At Paul Easton locksmiths we are very aware of the concerns people may have regarding having tradesmen working at the home but rest assured that i take every precaution possible to minimize close contact and ensure your safety

Once you have explained the problem to me i can carry out the work totally without you being present, after the work is completed i then wipe all the parts and areas i have been in contact with to ensure they are clean and safe.

My covid 19 covid-19 measures include the following safety precautions:

Wearing a mask & gloves
Social distancing
Sanitizing hands and tools
Payment options to pay by BACS transfer after the work is completed

For people who are particularly vulnerable or self isolating i will avoid entering your home unless absolutely necessary or in order to carry out repairs.

Security and burglary.

Its important to remember that while most of the country is locked down and people are staying at home the burglars are not !
Its not a good idea to leave entrance doors to your home unsecured or with broken and damaged locks which is what i'm finding people are doing. They are putting off essential repairs because they are at home all day.

Please remember most of the burglaries or entries into homes are carried out while you are asleep so please bear this in mind if you are putting off having doors repaired. You may be at home all day but the burglars know you have to sleep and over 90% of home break ins are through unlocked doors or windows.

Its looking ever more likely that this will not be a quick fix solution to the covid 19 problem so its better to get the doors repaired sooner rather than leave yourself vulnerable to a night time burglary.

The new Garador secure by design anti-theft doors being opened for repairs

Paul Easton Locksmiths and Garage door repairs working in the field.

This is the brand new Garador secured by design anti-theft garage door which cannot be opened under normal circumstances by any means other than the key operated locking system.

These doors are the very latest in production to prevent theft from garages by forcing the doors open with a jemmy or crowbar the locking system cannot be opened or accessed by any other means than with a key and operating the locking system.

Unfortunately this means that if they go wrong they cannot be opened unless you have the tools i designed to enable access for repairs.

This is a door which i opened today in Chepstow for a customer that the operating/locking system had gone wrong and the door was locked shut.
Once opened the door locking system is easily repaired.

The retaining lugs for the Adams Rite Hook Bolt lock were missing causing the old lock to come loose.

Cistern repair today where i swapped out the rubber seal on the flush valve to repair a cistern where water was running into the bowl. A simple repair which saves the cost of dismantling the whole cistern from the wc to replace the whole flush valve.

Covid 19 Wales. We are open for all repairs to doors windows and garage doors. Emergency repairs weekdays and weekends, evenings.
This was today's job in Rogiet nr Caldicot where a customer was left 3 weeks with no front door access after calling his insurance company out to claim on his home insurance cover only to be told that the door was too old to repair and they didn't have any parts. I repaired it in less than one hour of arriving. They sent one of the largest home repair companies in the UK to try and do this repair.

Pretty much all suppliers of parts/cables will tell you that these cannot be repaired and should be replaced
with a new spring box.
This is one of the early types i repaired last week.
These are identified by the fact that the later spring boxes will have a grey plastic cover, the early ones will be metal.
Contact us for any repairs to these spring boxes.
Warning.
Under no circumstances should you ever attempt to repair these early type spring boxes yourself they are extremely dangerous to work on.
Any repairs should only be carried out by a trained installer.

However Christmas day will be a limited service as like everyone i will be fitting in family time and Christmas lunch so their may be some waiting time involved.

Chepstow Bridge is the World's largest iron arch road bridge from the first 50 years (1780-1830) of iron and steel construction. The bridge was first opened on the 24th July 1816, and is an architectural marvel and feat of engineering that has stood the test of time.

The Old Wye Bridge or Town Bridge at Chepstow, also known historically as Chepstow Bridge , crosses the River Wye between Monmouthsire in Wales and Gloucestershire in England, close to close to Chepstow Castle. Although there had been earlier wooden bridges on the site since Norman times, the current road bridge was constructed of Cast Iron in 1816 during the Regency Period, by John Rastrick of Brigdnorth, who greatly modified earlier plans by John Rennie.

The bridge crosses a river with one of the highest tidal ranges in the world. It carried the main A48 road between Newport and Gloucester until 1988, when a new road bridge was opened downstream alongside Chepstow railway bridge. The road bridge now carries local traffic between Chepstow and Tutshill.

It is a Grade I listed building.

Chepstow Bridge is the World's largest iron arch road bridge from the first 50 years (1780-1830) of iron and steel construction.

Of the ten largest iron arch road bridges built in the world before 1830, only Chepstow remains.

Chepstow Bridge was designed and built by John Urpeth Rastrick, a remarkable engineer who also build some of the world's first steam engines from 1806 onwards and the first steam engine to run in the USA in 1829. However, as his work was primarily not in bridge engineering, most 19th/20th century bridge writers did not report his work, resulting in the Wye Bridge being ignored for so long.

The bridge is currently closed to traffic from the Tutshill side of Chepstow due to repair work from this week for the laying of a new Gas main in St Anne street.

So expect delays if your travelling at peak times particularly in the mornings.

To some degree this will effect our ability to get to early morning emergency calls quickly on the other side of town as we are located on the Tutshill side of Chepstow so please bear with us if you require us for a emergency call out situation.

Mostly the traffic is clear after around 9.30am.

Wales & West Utilities have begun exploratory works to replace the gas main on St Ann Street and a section of Wye Bridge in Chepstow this week, with temporary road closures, traffic orders and traffic management to commence next week for a period of approximately 7 weeks.

In essence, the existing one-way system on Bridge Street, Church Road and Lower Church Street will be suspended to permit the flow of two-way traffic and also some of the existing on-street parking on Lower Church Street will be suspended to accommodate and allow vehicles to pass safely, if and when appropriate.

Non destructive lock and door opening

Service of the week

Here at Paul Easton locksmiths we like to highlight some of our services that we feel are particularly good for our customers in and around the Chepstow area.

One of which is our non destructive opening service for locks and doors. Note that we include doors in this because as we shall see its a subtle difference between what a good experienced locksmith can do and what an inexperienced locksmith can do and what the adverts say.

Lets look at locks first.
Its well known that in the locksmith industry their is an over use of drills to gain entry to properties where the keys are missing or locked inside.
Not only is this a problem in the industry in that it creates a bad image of locksmiths, it also costs you the customer a lot more money.
That's not to say that a lot of local independent locksmiths don't provide this service.
In fact most are extremely skilled at opening and picking locks and provide an excellent service.

Its one of the many reasons why choosing local locksmiths is often cheaper and better for you in that usually they are much more skilled and have a lot more experience than a lot of the larger national company representatives.

We can't always promise to be able to pick open every lock, but what we do promise is that unless you the customer tell us other wise we always endeavor to exhaust all possible ways of gaining entry without damaging your locks.
Their are times when its impossible of course such as when a lock is damaged, which can often happen on locks that have been under attack from attempted break ins.

So what is NDE (non destructive entry) which is what you see on some websites for locksmiths.
Its the opening or picking of locks without force
However don't forget many of these larger companies often charge a big premium to say that they are using this method which is all well and good but you could be paying extra for it.

Why does this matter ?
Because you don't always need it !

While their are locksmith companies that make a big promotion of this type of non destructive opening on their websites using it as a main feature its all rather academic if you have lost your keys, even if you have spares inside the property.
Why ?
Because if you lose keys and someone gains entry with those keys then its highly likely your insurance will be void.
Best practice is you really have to change the locks in cases of lost or missing keys.
If not for insurance purposes then for peace of mind, what you don't want is someone sneaking around your house in the middle of the night after finding your keys all for the sake of changing a lock. After all while the locksmith is their he may as well change the lock anyway.

At Paul Easton locksmiths we only charge for the part/lock required as we are their anyway, so theirs no fitting charges.

Of all the doors requiring opening where you may not have to change the locks upvc is the most likely, yale nightlatches as well. Highly unlikely are mortice locks, because you can't lock a mortice lock and leave the keys inside, you can only lock them and lose the keys.

That's not to say its not a highly cost effective skill, their are many occasions where it does save the customer money and its something Paul Easton Locksmiths do on a regular basis as illustrated in the top photograph where i'm picking open a upvc door using an electric pick gun.

Now lets look at doors and NDE (non destructive opening) which in my experience is where the real savings can be made for the customer.

Its fair to say that a large part of a locksmiths work will be on upvc doors as these are the most common doors in the Uk now and nearly all local independent locksmiths will be adept at opening these types of locks and doors even though they don't always advertise NDE ( non destructive opening) as a main feature on their home page.

Its important to understand the differance, NDE does not mean that they can also open upvc doors with broken gearboxes.
NDE refers to locks only.

In my opinion non-destructive entry should extend to gaining entry to the dwelling without damage to the door as well, particularly on upvc doors where a mechanism is faulty/broken or a gearbox/centre case is jammed or broken.

At Paul Easton Locksmiths with over 40 years experience we specialize in these types of door openings.

This is where the better more experienced locksmiths really come into their own on jobs like this, its not unknown for a so called locksmith to take angle grinders to a door to get past the hooks.
I have seen £1000 plus doors ruined by such actions where the locksmiths didn't have the necessary skills to open these doors non destructively.

Shown in the photograph below is the kite mark your looking for, if your lock does not have this distinctive logo stamped on the face plate then its not insurance rated, even though it may be a five lever lock its still not adequate for most insurance companies.

What is BS3621 ?

BS3621 is a British Standard for locks fitted to doors, designed so we can easily know that a lock is of a good, theft-resistant standard.
This standard is most often specified for final exit doors on a property (front and back doors) as these are the most prone to break-in attempts. It's generally agreed that internal doors do not require the level of security offered by BS3621, although in some circumstances you may consider it necessary. If you don't need that level of security then cheaper locks with lower levels of security, such as 2 lever and 3 lever models, are available.

Are approved locks worth it?

Having a combination of approved window locks and approved door locks, especially on the main entrance to your home and ground floor and patio windows, should help your chances of getting a discount on your home insurance premiums.

If you do not already have any of these locks installed, then it could feel like a bit of an expensive investment to get them fitted in. However, in the long term, it could be worthwhile, as first of all it should actually decrease your chances of being burgled. Well i can tell you its not as easy as the advice on the internet and the very sketchy videos on you tube would have you believe.

If you try to fix garage door repairs yourself, you may end up causing another problem or making your situation even worse by doing the wrong thing.

The internet is full of DIY advice on repairing garage doors and how supposedly easy it is.

The problem is Its also extremely dangerous to attempt repairs on garage door springs and cables, they are under enormous tension which is something all this advice gives very little credence to.

If you do not have the correct knowledge or the necessary expertise, odds are that you will cause more damage instead of fixing the problem and quite possibly seriously injure yourself.

The other thing to bear in mind is people vastly underestimate their skill levels and tool kit.

However, let’s take a close look at a few garage door repair problem that should probably always be fixed by professional.

1. Bent Track

To make the movements of your garage door smooth, it goes up and down by rolling on the tracks. If these tracks become broken or bent, your garage door will not function property.

Road to Tintern open today 3rd August 2019

The A4666 to Tintern has finally re-opened

Finally the road is due to re-open tomorrow Saturday the 3rd of august.

Tintern and surrounding areas are open for business despite road works to the A466. Summer is here and marks the start of fetes and activities in the Wye Valley. A time to visit Tintern Abbey and take stock of the beautiful Monmouthshire Countryside. Monmouthshire County Council urges residents and visitors to take care due to the essential stabilisation work to the Wye Valley, A466 Tintern to St Arvans road. Work is expected to continue for five weeks, the contractor is working to a completion date of Friday 19th July.

The area has been the subject of extensive studies and consultation before allowing the work to proceed. Monmouthshire County Council is working closely with the contractor to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum and has been assured that the contractor is working a pattern of 11 days in 14 and an eleven hour working day.

However, the work is complex and involves ground anchors being drilled into the rock face. The council is working closely with the contractor to continually investigate how the works might be amended to reduce the road closure.

A diversion is in place along the B4293 via Devauden and Trelleck which is hoped to enable residents and visitors to visit and travel through the Wye Valley. For more information visit:

These garage doors were initially fitted with a spring box unit fitted above the garage door that came from the factory pre-tensioned.

This lady in Portskewett had made an inquiry about a repair after her cable had broken, only to be told that she would require a new spring box unit at a cost of £195.00 plus fitting, total cost nearly £300.00.
This was from a national company who didn't even bother to look at the job first.
She was told that the old unit could not be repaired.

Its not surprising though that she was told this, as when you look at this video on you tube showing how to repair them it doesn't actually show you anything on how to get the springs back in position as you can see from the comments left below it

In itself the video is actually fine, its not misleading, its in point of fact a video on how to fit cables to a pre-tensioned unit.

So you can see why a lot of fitters and companies simply replace the entire spring box unit due to the problem and danger of getting these springs back in position in order to feed the cables through as not only is it far easier and much faster for them to carry out this repair your paying the extra cost.

Garador themselves on their instructions say that you can get the springs back in position by pulling on the cables.
Well not unless your superman you can't.
Trust me i'v tried and with 40 years experience i can categorically tell them it can't be done. In fact i tried it with two of us and we just and i mean just managed to do it but it was incredibly hard to do and took us a long time.

Plus If the cables slip off the rollers as your doing it you have to start all over again as well.
So don't bother buying the cables thinking you can do this yourself it can't be done without special tools and a lot of experience.

I was able to fit new cables inside the existing spring box unit for her at a cost of £95.00 which is a third of the price she was quoted for this repair.
It always pays to have at least two quotes for a repair like this if your unsure and it seems to be expensive.

Another firm favourite on a glorious sunny Sunday afternoon is the Boat Inn just along from the Three Tuns where you can sit outside by the river and take in the sights and sounds of the live music coming from the bandstand and gaze towards the English side of the River Wye

Its a superb riverside location beside existing boat yards and near the town's former ship yards and other historical attractions with a strong maritime theme in this late 18th century inn.

This is another pub that Paul Easton Locksmiths has a long history with having worked here on the current conversion back in the early 1980s fitting the doors and locks to the front entrance door and private accommodation.

The building itself dates from 1789. The original character has survived in many of the interior features, such as the low ceiling and stone flags on the floor. At one time the inn was known as the Chepstow Boat. From around the Second World War to the 1980s the building was a private home. Inquests were held in the building in the 19th century, often into the deaths of people recovered from the river.
One area of the Boat Inn, in the section to the right of the entrance, is said to be haunted. A notice painted on the wall advises customers: “While sitting here you [may] experience a sudden shiver or catch a fleeting glimpse of a figure from times past

Serving real ales and home cooked food its well worth a visit.

The inn was built alongside a dry dock, where ships’ hulls were repaired until the mid-19th century.
This waterfront area is known as The Back, an old word for quay or wharf.

Previously it was known as “Hell’s acre” because of the rowdiness and fights were common when sailors hit the bottle in the dozen or so pubs in the area.

The area along the river bank river Wye was once the hub of Chepstow’s maritime activity. There were two slipways, and officers kept watch from a Custom House to ensure the correct duties were paid on incoming goods. Timber was one of the main commodities which passed through. Tourists boarded pleasure boats here for trips on the river Wye, and in 1840 Chartists who took part in the Newport uprising of 1839 departed from here after being sentenced to transportation to Australia.

Catch the live band at the Three Tuns pub on Sundays Chepstow River Bank

Another beautiful day on the river bank in Chepstow this Sunday, where if you stroll along the river from the Old Wye Bridge you come across one of the older pubs in Chepstow, The Three Tuns.
Early 17th century public house and a pub for much of that time; bare-boards interior with painted farmhouse pine furniture, a couple of mismatched sofas by a wood burner, serving local ales and ciders with a very reasonably priced home-made bar food, regular live music; dogs welcome and wheelchair access.
Playing most Sundays is a live band, this week it was a blues duo in the afternoon.
Liam Ward Alexander and Malcolm Thorne .... harmonica Blues. If you like blues which i do, then a very enjoyable listen.

They do have bed and breakfast facilities as well, where incidentally Paul Easton Locksmiths were called out to open one of the letting rooms to the front of the pub on Bridge Street last summer when the lock broke on the front door.
It seems like we have worked in every single pub and hotel in Chepstow over the last ten years.

Heat wave in July, stop the burglars and lock your windows.

We are in a July heatwave and once again we are seeing a rise in burglaries local to the Chepstow and Caldicot areas.
Why ?
Because you are all leaving your windows open and the thieves are capitalizing on this summer weather.

Did you know that most burglaries occur between the hours of 9.00am and 4.30pm weekdays ?
And that shockingly nearly half of burglaries committed are spur of the moment and are opportunistic.

In over 25% of cases someone is at home when they enter your house during the day.
Mort burglaries happen in a matter of a few minutes, they simply enter check the obvious locations for personal belongings and jewellery and are gone.
They will be in and out within 5 to 10 minutes, long gone are the days when big ticket items like televisions and dvd players were being stolen they are after credit card,s car keys, jewellery etc.

What can you do to prevent this ?

Lock your larger downstairs windows, with the correct handles fitted you should have a key to lock them and just use the smaller opening casements.
By locking the window handles it prevents a potential thief from leaning through a smaller window and opening the larger one to gain access.

Use the upstairs windows to get air flowing through, of course you need to chain up ladders securely or keep them locked away.

If you want to leave front and back door's open then fit security chains this will allow you to leave the door slightly open but prevent access by intruders.
This will allow cooler air to flow through and still be secure from unlawful entry.

We are open for business

If you live in Tintern or Brockweir, Catbrook and need a locksmith then rest assured Paul Easton Locksmiths are based in Chepstow and we can still get to you despite the road closures on the A466 which has been closed since May 2019 this year between St Arvans and Tintern for Monmouthshire County Council to undertake stabilisation works of a 200m section of unstable cliff face.

I attended an emergency call their today where an elderly couple were locked out of their home just opposite the famous Wye Valley Hotel in Tintern.
Thank you to the Wye Valley Hotel for looking after them and phoning Paul Easton as their nearest local locksmiths based in the town of Chepstow only some 5 miles away.

From Chepstow i was able to get through to them using little know roads cutting through from the Devauden road within 20 minutes of their call to myself.

The opening of the door was completed within five minutes of getting to them and no damage to the door or locks was incurred.
I left them a very happy couple having retrieved their keys from inside the house after i opened the door for them.
With no emergency call out charges their only cost was an attendance fee of £65.00 and they are still able to use the existing keys and locks.
Where other companies would drill out the locks requiring new ones, we wholly aim to achieve a non destructive opening service where ever possible.

Tales of a Chepstow Cyclist

Routes through Tintern while the road is closed on your bike.

Further to our updates on the closure of the road at Tintern.
I can tell you as a keen cyclist that their is indeed a route up from Tintern Valley to St Arvans near Chepstow. which i have been using regularly while the road is closed.

Turn right by the Abbey itself head up that road and stay left climbing up through the lane to bring you out at Eagles nest car park from their you are on the road past Chepstow Racecourse into the town of Chepstow.
Everyone misses it because its a lane not a road and its signposted closed at the moment.
you can actually get a vehicle up through it buts it not easy as its so steep and narrow.

Its pretty steep mind you and not for the faint-hearted also its more of a track than a road so be warned if you need to un-clip to allow a vehicle to get past, although you won't see many its not an easy task.

The road should be open shortly

The latest information we have is that the road is due to open in early August 2019.

Paul Easton Locksmiths were down in Brockweir just by Tintern on the river Wye yesterday doing a lock repair and all the local traders were complaining about the disruption to summer trade and lack of tourists.

Local business owners say the ongoing closure of the A466 between Tintern and St Arvans is ’wreaking havoc’ with their trade and are pressing the county council to speed up the job.

The stretch of road has been closed since 7th May for Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) to undertake stabilisation works of a 200m section of cliff face.

It means that, in the height of the tourist season, diversion signs are encouraging motorists to avoid the picturesque Wye Valley route completely and follow the A48 via Lydney as an alternative.

One of the problems is that only local people know of the other routes into Tintern which are far quicker and faster than the diversion signs.

Although we couldn't find anything online about the re-opening local people are saying first week in August it opens again.

We went through Hewelsfield and dropped down into Tintern that way to enable us to still work around this area.

I have even seen diversion signs to Trellech and Monmouth which is definitely just about the longest route around possible.

We at Paul Easton Locksmiths are still able to get to you though for locksmith work and garage door repairs within about 15 to 20 minutes.

As i know that a lot residents are telling us that companies servicing this area for other types of work have been unable to get through and are just telling customers they will resume service as soon as the road re-opens.

This is what David Davies had to say about the situation,

Monmouth MP David Davies recently met with Community Councillor Rita Edwards to discuss the situation.

Following a site visit, Mr Davies said: "The continued closure of the road is causing devastation for businesses in Tintern. There are ways through but as we can see, the alternative routes are narrow and in very poor condition".

In response to concerns raised by Tintern Community Council and local businesses, MCC has made available extended working hours and weekend working to ensure the works are completed as quickly as possible.

But Mr Davies is calling for answers after some local people told him that they had walked the route and noticed that nobody seemed to be working there.

Community Councillor Rita Edwards explained that businesses are "desperate for the work to be finished and for improvements to be made to the other roads in the area which are falling apart".

She also highlighted issues with poor signage in the area, with "one sign warning people not to rely on their satnavs - yet nobody in the area seems to know what it means".

The site is said to have ecological complications and has required appropriate assessments and licensing to be put in place before any works could proceed.

Wintour's Leap Chepstow

Fortunately living and working in the Wye Valley as a locksmith takes me past some lovely tourist spots. This was on the way to a job in Tintern.
Here's a photo looking towards the Town of Chepstow along the river Wye taken from Wintour's Leap on the Woodcroft Road coming out of Tutshill where i live.
Wintour's Leap is a noted rock climbing location and viewpoint. It is located on the English side of the Wye Valley, north of Chepstow.

Wintour's Leap is named after Sir John Wintour who, hotly pursued on his horse by Parliamentary forces, according to local myth survived a leap off the cliff and, landing safely in the Wye below, swam to safety in the nearby Chepstow Castle.
In fact, Wintour did escape from the Roundheads by using the river nearby on two separate occasions, but from less spectacular positions at Launcaut and Sedbury.

Interested in Rock climbing ?

Here's some local information.

The area around Wintour's Leap is a very popular limestone rock climbing. It contains over 300 recorded routes most of which are multi pitch. It has a high proportion of quality climbs up to 100 meters in length with something to offer all levels of climber. From south to north, the climbing areas are Woodcroft quarry, Fly Wall, GO Wall, South Bay, Far South Bay, North Wall, and far North Wall. Woodcroft quarry is behind Fly Wall and is the most recently developed area; routes are still being added (2009). The majority of the routes in the quarry are bolt protected sport routes of varying degrees of quality. The Fly Wall is the most convenient trad route area with a small number of well travelled routes.

Great Overhanging (GO) Wall is the largest cliff at Wintour's and contains 4 and 5 pitch extremes. The routes here are multi pitch 'trouser fillers' all of which are technical and steep. Many break through the massive overhangs near the top of the wall. The routes are in the range E2 - E6, but also includes the iconic 'must do' route 'Burning Giraffe' at HVS. The southern bays contain a number of easier and very good multipitch routes in the grade range of Mod - E2. The north wall consists again of rather steep multi pitch routes. Although there are 2 HS routes, and a number of very good VS routes. The far end of north wall is again very steep with stepped overhangs. The rock is also very compact, not lending itself to traditional protection. There is a lot of fixed gear here.

Unfortunately as good a spot as this is, theirs not very much parking and parking on the road is difficult as its pretty narrow in parts.

The best plan would be to park in Launcaut just a little higher up the road and walk back to this spot.

Its a very popular spot with climbers and walkers though.

Preventing burglary attack on euro cylinders

Shown in the photograph is a euro cylinder fitted on a upvc door that we recently attended for a repair where a burglar had attempted to gain entry .
In this instance the burglar attempted to first break the cylinder then drill it out as you can see from the image.
On this occasion they failed to gain entry.
This is fast becoming a problem for homeowners who have these older type locks fitted in particular where they will snap the cylinders if they protrude from the handles due to the wrong sizes being fitted or attempt to drill them out.

What can you do to protect against an attack on a door like this ?

Paul Easton locksmiths can supply and fit cylinders that are both snap resistant and drill resistant.

The one we supply is the Yale Superior euro double cylinder is anti bump , anti pick, anti drill and anti snap on both sides as well as having been tested to TS007 1* kite marked standard and being secured-by-design approved.

Tintern road Closures still in place causing havoc. Latest update on roadworks.

Latest on the road closures July 15th 2019 that have closed the access road into Tintern and Brockweir.

This week we are highlighting one of the other services we offer as a local Chepstow business.

CJ Locksmiths offers a multitude of other repair services which comes under the general property maintenance umbrella. Our primary business is the fitting and repair of doors and locks and emergency locksmith work.

Summer brings opportunities to the burglar. During the course of our work at CJ Locksmiths as an emergency call locksmiths service and door and window repair specialists we get called to a lot of burglaries.
It would surprise most people and when fitting locks we tell customers, that In a lot of cases the thieves do not even have to use force. Thieves get in through an open door or window.Over three quarters of burglars committing a crime gain entry through a door or window and in a lot of cases the doors and windows are left open, they simply walk in or climb through.

Contrary to popular belief a lot of burglaries take place between 9.00am and 3.00pm that's because most people are at work or out shopping or picking the children up from school. It can take less than 10 minutes to enter a house and leave with credit cards, keys and valuables. Once in the burglar will head for the master bedroom because most people don't hide their valuables, their in drawers or nightstands or jewellery boxes and burglars know this.
Most burglars are no longer after your household possessions, those days are gone, they are after high end car keys, passports and bank cards, passports and identity theft. Jewellery and gold items rate very highly to thieves because these are easy to sell for cash easy to steal and transport in pockets away from the crime.

You can make it a lot harder by installing a small safe to keep valuables in, bank cards passports etc , this although it can be opened with a lot of effort, takes time and creates noise, something the average burglar doesn't want to spend time doing and wont have the necessary tools to do it with them. Most burglars don't carry any comprehensive tools or equipment in case of being stopped and searched, if they do carry a tool it will usually only be a screwdriver or jemmy. Beware the rogue salesman

CJ Locksmiths were contacted by a lady in St Arvans, a small village just a few miles from Chepstow this week with an inquiry as to weather a upvc door could be repaired.
The lady in question gave me a brief description of the problem and finished by asking if we charge to look at the job as she had been told it was beyond repair, the answer being no, we do not have a charge for giving estimates for work.
It transpired that in fact she had been told by another company who arranged for a salesman to call that she had been told the door was beyond repair and would require replacing at a cost of over a thousand pounds.
This is something that as a local locksmiths and door repair business based in Chepstow we come across fairly often, people call out of area companys who advertise under upvc doors and windows fitted double glazing etc giving the impression that they are based locally but in fact are in fact located no where near this area.
These are not in fact locksmiths and door repair businesses but are double glazing companys looking to sell new doors and windows to unsuspecting customers who are unaware that these doors can in fact be repaired at a fraction of the cost of fitting new.
CJ Locksmiths offer a complete on site repair service for all types of upvc door and lock repairs. Shown here is the Multipoint mechanism in question being repaired on site. The cost of this was £165.00 completed saving the customer well over a thousand pounds to replace the door when it was not necessary not to mention the inconvenience of having a front door taken out and replaced.

Its surprising how many calls we get for this service so today i thought we could shed some light on how much it costs, as most people assume that calling a locksmith is going to be exspensive.

Women locked out and leaves the stove on fire prevented

Another interesting emergency call today. We had a call just after lunch time where a lady had got herself locked out and had left a cooker hot plate on with pans burning. Unfortunately the local fire brigade couldn't attend in less than 60 minutes as it was classed as a non emergency because as of that time their was no fire. Its also a problem to get their quicly as these are very rural areas, so she rang us at CJ Locksmiths in Chepstow hopeing that we could help.
Because we are locally based and Shirenewton is approximately only 5 miles from Chepstow we were at the property within 10 minutes. It took another 3 minutes to access the locked door and no damage to the locks or doors was required. All this at a cost of just £75.00 to the home owner.

As on the previous blog post CJ Locksmiths has been experiencing some technical issues with the web site domain name. We are glad to report that the web site is now up and running as normal. As last reported the domain name was lost to us and Google were unable to show the web site on a Google/page search, we now have a new domain name www.pauleastonlocksmiths.com which has replaced the old cjlocksmiths.net domain name. We are still the same business as CJ Locksmiths its purely the web site address that has changed.

Here at CJ Locksmiths and Paul Easton plumbing services in Chepstow i often get about my favourite tools, this is the humble footprint wrench.

For over a century tradesmen around the world have been using the Footprint wrench as the tool that gets the job done and lasts a lifetime. The Footprint wrench was designed in 1875 but is just as useful in today's modern world. Thousands are sold across the world every year for use as a general plumbing and pipe work tool. It has an old fashioned design but within the design and quality of manufacturing lies its’ secret. It will move pretty much anything that feels immovable.

The Footprint wrench consists of two parts – one forged with a hook jaw at the end, and the other of pressed steel with carefully profiled teeth that locks onto the forged hook. The wrench is adjusted to various diameters by means of a screw bolt/pin.

So their you have it, probably the least expensive tool i have in my plumbing kit but pretty much the most useful.

Adventures on the bike

As many of my customers know i'm a keen cyclist, training and riding within the Wye Valley and recently headed off to France to take on the mighty Alpe d'huez challenge with my daughter.

The word ‘iconic’ is often over-worked in cycling, but its application to the climb up Alpe d’Huez is entirely justified, with this fearsome climb set to make its 30th Tour De France appearance in the 2018 edition of this race.

The 13.8-kilometres works its way from Bourg d’Oisans to the ski resort of Alpe d’Huez in the French Alps, navigating 21 hairpin bends along the way.

My time of 1 hour 4 minutes 54 seconds placing me 376 on the all time world ranking for my age group.

The road to Tutshill in Chepstow

This was the scene at mid-day March 3rd 2018 the road to Tutshill just passable by 4 wheel drive as a land rover makes its way up in the snowy conditions as the road heads up into Tidenham where snow is still blocking many of the roads higher up.

Driving conditions are still treacherous though and CJ Locksmiths are still unable to get onto any side roads. Hopefully we will resume full service for lock and garage door repairs by Monday at the latest. For emergency repairs to locks you can telephone us to book for Monday 5th March as we only have limited slots available now. Unfortunately we are only able to carry out temporary garage door repairs for the early part of next week.

We have looked extensively at this problem last year as this came up on a few occasions and just before Christmas 2018 we launched our new locksmith services for the elderly service which you can view on our main web site to deal with this common problem. Elderly relatives often have no one in the immediate area to be present whilst the work or repair is carried out. This ensures that the work is carried out to a good standard and at a fair price and can be inspected before payment is made by a relative. Chepstow still snowed in

This is just before dark March 2nd 2018

Its looking increasingly unlikely that CJ Locksmiths will be able to operate a service on Saturday March 3rd 2018 this was the scene late today with snow still falling and all the roads around Chepstow and Caldicot,Magor still pretty much impassable. We will keep you updated as soon as we can get the van back on the road.

Cabinet makers tools

Here at CJ Locksmiths we are always looking at new tools. As a carpentry and joiner i always like to try out some of the finer cabinet makers tools. This is a side rebate plane that my brother Joe Easton is using to restore a chest of drawers made by the Stag furniture makers. A french polisher by trade he is a fine cabinet maker as well. Its a tool i may well invest in having seen its usefulness ably demonstrated here.

The big freeze continues with virtually no traffic able to get around, unfortunately our services are still suspended. we will keep you updated, as soon as we can resume with repairs we will post on the blog.

Chepstow snowed in

All chepstow locksmiths services suspended due to the severe weather.

All the roads around Chepstow town are completely blocked in with snow very little traffic is able to get around apart from 4 wheel drives.
